Background

Indecent by Paula Vogel tells the story behind God of Vengeance, a 1907 Yiddish play that faced censorship and scandal after its American debut. The play follows the artists who brought it to life, tracing their passion and resilience across decades, languages, and continents.

Design Overview

In our production, projections were used with intentional restraint to complement the minimalist set. The media design focused on creating a flexible system of supertitles that could anchor the audience across shifts in time, place, and language. Subtitles were rear projected in a typographic style inspired by silent film.

This design approach allowed the media to serve both dramaturgical and practical functions—supporting the storytelling without overwhelming the quiet intimacy of the stage. The projection layout was developed in close collaboration with scenic designer Dan Gray so that the projections would be perfectly integrated into the set world without distraction.
